Biomedical Engineering is a marriage of two incongruous branches, namely Engineering and Medicine. With the advent of medical electronics, more and more participation of engineers is being demanded in the field of medicine. This has necessitated the birth of Biomedical Engineers, who are able to grasp the essences of medicine as well as are able to converse in the medical jargon, but are primarily engineers with a solid background in nearly all the fields of engineering. The Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering was started in the year 1992 at Manipal Institute of Technology. The syllabus was initially drafted along the lines of the syllabi at Osmania University, which was the premier institute to offer Biomedical Engineering as a degree course in India. The first batch of graduates passed out in the year 1996. The Biomedical Engineering course was initially a part of the Department of Electronics & Communication. Later a separate department was set up. The department also offers a M.Tech course in Bio-Medical Engineering. A variety of modern facilities are provided at MIT to help the students get a practical and in-depth knowledge in this field. It has a staff very dedicated teachers from multidisciplinary fields, to cover the various facets of the subject. Three labs, one for Computers, one for Microprocessors and one for Biomedical Equipment and Electronics are provided along with practical training in 11 different departments at the Kasturba Medical College and Hospital (under the revised syllabus starting from 1998). Under the new syllabus, students are to be exposed to various medical subjects so as to bridge the gap between engineers and doctors. The college library has more than 500 books on the subjects covered in the curriculum and many more on the related subjects of interests. Apart from this, various other branches also provide their facilities to the biomedical engineers, in order to assist them in their studies. |
