Department Of Architecture

The Department of Architecture was established in 1979 with a view of partially satisfying the need for architects for the development of the nation. A well-trained architect was scarcely available and the problem became more serious when the outflow of technical personnel to neighbouring Gulf countries began. In a record period of five years of initial existence the department was given recognition by the Council of Architecture. With the dedicated efforts of the students and the faculty members the department has grown very fast. Constant monitoring of the educational program and changes relevant to the present pace of development were affected from time to time with a view of introducing better architects into the professional field. At present the school has been adjudged as one of the best seven schools of architecture in India.

Exhibition Hall The department imbibed the approach in imparting the kind of training that makes the student a " down to earth " architect. The main objective of the department is " to achieve excellence in imparting architectural education and training". The main area of thrust is the region in and around the institute. The department tries to establish a symbiotic relationship between itself and the region around. The Department of Architecture acts as a resource center for the region. It tries to disseminate the information gathered through field trips, research etc. back to the people of the region.

The department was subsequently shifted to the lowest floor of the Architecture and Civil block where it has remained since. The area is now occupied by the Civil Engineering museum, Security, planning department etc. Students of architecture have wholly designed the foyer of the department, and it acts as a central activity space.

In September 1996 the MIT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hindustan Office Products Limited to establish an Authorized Training Center of Softdesk Inc U.S.A. in the Department of Architecture. The training center has been successfully commissioned.
